Infant Injury and Death from Playkids USA Convertible Cribs
Infant products are growing in number and creativity, and many parents are ready to pounce on any product that will aid in their routine. While this can be of great benefit to the child-rearing population, innovation can often come with a terrible downside. That reality has been driven home once again with a recent recall based on tragic consequences, and that situation will be detailed below along with a brief look at a few other infant products that have been found to be unreasonably dangerous.
Playkids USA Convertible Cribs
Playkids USA had released its line of convertible cribs onto the marketplace recently, and this line of cribs was seen as truly inventive in the way that they could be used in several locations. They were able to expand and to be folded down into a size that made them easy to be transported, and one of the ways in which this was possible centered on the makeup of the sides of the crib.
The sides were made with mesh that expanded and helped the produce fold out into a full-sized crib. However, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced that Playkids USA was initiating a voluntary recall of 2,000 units of this product because of a death that occurred in its own city of Brooklyn, New York. A 5-month-old infant was killed while sleeping in this crib because the child became entrapped in a space between the crib's mattress and the mesh siding, causing him to suffocate.
Further analysis showed that this could indeed be far from an isolated incident given the product's design and the materials used, which is what prompted the recall. The product line that's been recalled is Playkids U.S.A. convertible crib/playpen/bassinet/bed with model number PLK-909. "Playkids U.S.A." can be found on the packaging and on a label sewn into the side of the crib. The model number can be found on the packaging.
List of Infant Products Recalled for November, 2008:
Of course, this is not the only recall that's been initiated recently. Below are just a few examples of other recalls of non-toy infant products that were deemed too dangerous to remain on the market:
- Optave Inc.'s Action Baby Carriers - This carrier was recalled because it showed a tendency to create a fall hazard because the strap that was to attach to the child's chest tended to come undone.
- Target's Circo Children's Bobbie Socks - These socks were pulled from the market because the ribbon attached to the socks tended to come loose, creating a choking hazard.
- Empress Arts Ltd.'s Hooded Sweaters - The sweaters were removed from shelves because it was shown that the drawstrings could come loose and create a choking hazard.
