Gardasil Comes Under Scrutiny amid Reports of Negative Reactions

One of the most daunting health challenges in women around the world is the potential for developing cervical cancer. Years of research has led to several discoveries, one of which was that a certain virus, known as the human papillomavirus, or HPV, can lead to cancer. Therefore, medications began to be formulated to defending a female’s body against the invasion of this virus, and thus minimizing the possibility of the development of cervical cancer in women.

One of the leading medications designed to treat this situation is known as Gardasil, which is manufactured and distributed by Merck & Co. It was approved for release onto the market by the FDA in 2006, and early returns were not only seen as positive, but extremely profitable for Merck & Co. It’s been estimated that doses of Gardasil were administered to 8 million women and girls in the United States alone, and the drug generated approximately $1.5 billion in annual revenue for the drug company.

The marketing of Gardasil was also quite prominent. Advertisements for the drug appeared on television as part of an extremely aggressive campaign, and these advertisements also appeared in movie theaters and in other locations that were thought to reach the target market. As a result, the drug received a lot of notice and resulted in high demand.

Problems Encountered with Gardasil: Adverse Side effects noted.

Although early reports and revenue returns were positive in nature, it wasn’t long before adverse effects began to arise in the thousands. There were approximately 8,000 adverse effects reports from those who took Gardasil, and these negative reactions included:

  • Seizures
  • Convulsions
  • Spontaneous abortion
  • Coma
  • Anaphylactic shock
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome
  • Paralysis
  • Optic lesions
  • Death

At this time, there is no known connection between the drug and any one of these individual adverse reactions, but these are the reactions that have been recorded by those who used the medication.

Several theories have been posited for the reasons behind this issue, but the one that seems to be more prominent than others is that some doctors feel that Gardasil is marketed and sold to females who may simply be too young to need and/or to properly internalize this medication. There have been 18 deaths reported in patients who have taken Gardasil, and one of those females was only 11 years old. The girl suffered a fatal heart attack in May of 2007 just three days after receiving a Gardasil injection. Her doctor blamed the drug, but the federal government has yet to confirm that connection officially.

Your Next Step if hurt or injured from Gardasil injections:

If you or your daughter or loved one is considering Gardasil for preventative cervical cancer treatment, you need to consider all of the facts available. Although 8,000 adverse reactions have been recorded from an estimated 8 million doses administered in the United States seems like a relatively small probability that you would be affected, no known connection has yet been established, which means that everyone faces some sort of risk in this situation. If you or someone you love has suffered because of Gardasil, seek legal help immediately.
