OBTape Vaginal Sling Serious Side Effects

One of the most overlooked and underpublicized health problems faced by women today is female stress urinary incontinence.  This condition is caused by many factors, including, obviously, stress, but can be brought on by other factors.  Given the pain, discomfort and otherwise inconvenient problems caused by stress urinary incontinence, which is basically a problem controlling the bladder, several companies put their efforts towards finding a solution.

Mentor Corporation OB Tape Vaginal Sling Product

One example of such a solution was formulated by the Mentor Corporation.  Its product was known as the OBTape Vaginal Sling.  This product was unique in its design from its competitors, and it was originally approved for marketing, distribution and sale in the United States in 2003.  Its basic function and intended use was to strengthen the interior of the urethra to allow for better bladder control and a much higher degree of comfort by supporting the muscles that control the flow of urine.

It was administered to patients by surgically implanting the device into the woman’s body, and it was intended to provide constant help without any need for ongoing maintenance.  However, despite three years of success in terms of sales, the product soon ran into problems.  The most daunting aspect of these problems was that they did not move into the public’s consciousness until 35,000 women had the OBTape sling implanted.

Risks of the OB Tape Vaginal Sling

Unfortunately for these thousands of women, problems began to surface that put many of them at risk aside from those who had already suffered greatly according to reports.  The OBTape vaginal sling was pulled from the market in 2006 after several instances of serious problems were developing around the country.

Specifically, the problem seems to be rooted in that uniqueness of the OBTape vaginal sling’s design, as alluded to above.  Most of the products competitors were designed with a mesh-driven, woven manner of building the frame, but the OBTape vaginal sling was not woven.  Not being woven meant that oxygen and other nutrients were not able to pass from the product and into the woman’s body, creating serious pain and other health problems.

These health problems included internal bleeding, the tearing of the interior wall of the woman’s urethra and vaginal area, extreme pain and of course no help whatsoever with bladder control, which was the product’s original intent.
