What Prompted the Peter Pan® Peanut Butter Recall?
On February 14, 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a warning to consumers nationwide about a potential connection between Peter Pan® and Great Value® brands peanut butter and a recent outbreak of salmonella. The warning recommended that consumers dispose of all Great Value® and Peter Pan® peanut butter containers bearing a product code beginning with 2-1-1-1. The FDA's report was prompted by at least 288 reported cases of salmonella poisoning in individuals across 39 states that had been linked to contaminated peanut butter.
Shortly after the FDA warning, ConAgra, which manufactures both Great Value® and Peter Pan® peanut butter brands at the same Georgia plant, initiated a voluntary recall of the allegedly contaminated containers. At present, approximately 425 cases of salmonella infection have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control. Although the outbreak has not claimed any lives, nearly 20 percent of infected victims have required hospitalization after eating the spoiled peanut butter.
Representing individuals nationwide from San Diego in Southern California, our Peter Pan® peanut butter recall attorneys and salmonella lawyers will pursue compensation for harm caused by the consumption of tainted peanut butter.
What is salmonella?
Salmonella is a family of bacteria that can cause serious intestinal infections. It is also the second most common cause foodborne illness. For individuals with poor health or weakened immune systems, salmonella can potentially lead to deadly infections.
Symptoms of salmonella poisoning (salmonellosis) can include:
- Chills
- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal Cramps
Salmonella contamination is often caused by improperly handled or undercooked poultry and eggs. The peanuts used in manufacturing peanut butter are typically heated to high temperatures to kill germs and bacteria. For this reason, it is believed that the contamination that led to the Peter Pan® and Great Value® peanut butter recalls may have resulted from unclean jars or equipment.
