Yasmin Birth Control Side Effects Danger

Many people understand that in today’s society, there is a huge market for birth control.  These efforts include shots, inserts, pills and countless other methods, all of which are designed to prevent unwanted pregnancies.  While each strategy has its own benefits and potential problems, one of the most popular methods to hit the market in recent times is Yasmin, which is also known as “Yas” and “Yaz” by many.

Yasmin is a pill that’s offered by prescription, and it works much in the same way that the traditional ‘birth control pill’ does – the woman takes one pill daily to control the body so that sperm is not able to penetrate a fertile egg and thereby result in a pregnancy.  Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals is the company that’s now in control of the manufacture and distribution of Yasmin, and it’s shown to be quite a profitable medication in recent years.

Brief History of Yasmin Use

Yasmin was originally formulated in the early part of the 21st Century, and it was tested and ultimately approved for entry onto the American marketplace by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001.  Since then, it has grown in prevalence due to its early positive results.  Estimates show that Yasmin generated $488 million in sales in the United States alone in 2007.

However, recent news has come to light that casts a shadow on the safety of using Yasmin, and the early results of studies designed to come to a conclusion regarding the risks that result from using this pill are not encouraging.

Problems Dangers with Yasmin side effects noted

Generally, Yasmin and its generic counterparts which contain an almost identical chemical compound have been linked to the following potential side effects:

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pulmonary embolism (PE)
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Death

In particular, a recent study was performed and published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.  The study analyzed 15,645 females who were using Yasmin, all of whom came to the study with potential risk factors, examples of which appear below:

  • High blood pressure
  • History of heart problems
  • Overweight
  • Smoking
  • Assorted cardiovascular problems

The study, which centered on the development of DVT, found that those who used Yasmin and had these risk factors present in their medical histories showed a much higher risk for the development of this disease.

Other news and studies have linked Yasmin to the other potential side effects listed above, which means that while more research could be necessary to come to a definitive conclusion, risk factors are being identified and side effects are being linked to this medication.

Your Next Step if Hurt or Injured from taking Yasmin Birth control.

If you or someone you love has taken Yasmin or any of the generic equivalents, you need to act now.  Contact your doctor immediately, especially if you have any risk factors in your past, to obtain a full medical evaluation as soon as possible.  You may need to move towards a different method of birth control.

If you have been injured by this medication, you also need to contact a defective drugs attorney as soon as possible to schedule a free initial consultation.  You’ll need answers in order to make a sound decision regarding how you should proceed, and that’s what you’ll receive when you contact an experienced attorney.
